​In 2012, the Chief and Councils of the Lake Huron First Nations of the Robinson Huron Treaty wanted to ensure that former members of their communities were not forgotten in the RHT Settlement for the past annuity compensation. This is why they made the decision, based on Anishinaabe legal principles, to set aside funds for these individual as part of the Settlement's Compensation Disbursement Agreement (CDA). This set aside is referred to as the 1% fund.  It is available for individuals who were unilaterally taken off the treaty list by the federal government's Indigenous Services Canada (ISC)
